These are some of the best ways to improve your websites’ ranking in Google’s ‘Snack Pack’ search results. You can see where these results display in the image below:
- Quality/authority of citations
Citations are mentions of your website that are posted on other websites; they can either be directly or indirectly linked to your website. They are deemed to be the most important of the factors in terms of ranking; this is because Google take into account unique information linking to your site as one of their primary factors for improving your ranking. Google’s main focus is their users, so they want their users to get the best information they can possibly get. If your website has the best possible information for their users that is completely original content, your ranking will rocket.
2. Quality/authority of inbound links to your Domain
Inbound links are links on other websites that are related to your website, the two biggest reasons for the inbound links being so important are the quality and the authority of the links. The quality of your links means how they are integrated onto other websites and their reason for being there, e.g. if your article is on another website it is considered to be a quality link rather than you spamming the comments section with links to your website. The authority side relates to the authority the domain hosting your link has, for example, if your article is featured on Forbes, chances are this will help you rank higher as Forbes is so prestigious.
3. Quantity of native Google reviews
Google is now starting to factor in reviews from customers into their algorithms due to their growing importance, a new factor that has emerged is the quantity of reviews on Google + itself, Google is interested in how many reviews you have and from this they can determine how useful you are to their users and thus a potential customer.
4. Consistency of structured citations
It’s all well and good having one or two good citations, but it’s even better for your chances at ranking to have constant quality citations from domains with authority, the more citations you have the more Google will begin to recognise your domain to be useful to their users, as you are gaining more recommendations telling people to visit your website from websites that are already trusted by Google.
5. Quantity of inbound links to your domain
Just like the quantity of citations, the quantity of quality links with authority matters to your local ranking, the more links you have from trustworthy sites the more your website will be deemed to be of high quality and authority similar to theirs. Just be careful you go about this in the right way though, be careful about what kind of websites you are linking to and make sure they are trustworthy, as this will damage your abilities to rank due to Google’s spiders deeming you as a spam site through your association to another spam site.
6. Quantity of inbound links to your domain from locally relevant domains
An easier way to acquire quality links is to target websites that are local to your area that are deemed to be quality websites by Google, if they link your website you have a better chance of ranking highly, it will also be easier to get in touch with these businesses as they are local to you rather than attempting to get on an internationally renowned website.
7. Domain authority of Website
Domain authority is a tool developed by Moz, if you download the Moz toolbar from their website, you’ll see a score out of 100 on the left side of the bar and the score determines how good your webpages chances are of ranking highly for your particular search. The higher the score the more chance your web page has of ranking highly. But Moz states it is easier to grow from 20-30 than it would be from 70-80, so as your score goes up it gets harder for you to increase your score, this one is more for monitoring how the rest of the factors have been working for you.
8. Proximity of Address to the Point of Search
This one focuses on the distance between your business and the user that is looking for your business, someone from another country is not going to use your business if your primary focus is selling to local customers, so you want to optimize your page for people nearby to you more than you do for people who are not near you at all. Another example would be that someone who sells shoes in Manchester would not feature in a snack pack for Newcastle for someone searching for a specific type of shoe, as they are not local to that user, so they would experience what is called a “proximity lockout” as the distance between the customer and the business is too far to be considered a local search.
9. Keyword Relevance of Domain Content
Google’s focus on keywords has relaxed over the years, purely because people oversaturated their Domains with it so much. But it can still factor, mainly through Google checking your keywords are actually related to your Domain and not just put in there so you can optimize your ranking.
In short it’s all about linking to strong, quality domains of authority as much as you can in order to surround yourself with a strong presence, allowing you to rank as high as possible and hopefully stay in the top 3 in the snack pack. Once you’ve optimized your site for all these factors, all you have to do is maintain the factors.
It’s important to remember that your Domain can feature in the local organic search results as well as the Snack Pack at the top of the page, or it may not. Subtle differences exist in the search results produced, but we generally notice that if a client ranks within snack pack results, their ranking for organic search results is usually good too.
